Raising awareness of nursing among young people – OKE visits schoolsCare is an issue that affects almost every family sooner or later – and yet many young people know very little about what it really entails. That's why I regularly visit schools and talk about my everyday life as a nurse and founder of OKE.
One stop on my journey is particularly close to my heart: the
SOB in Klagenfurt. That's where I first came into contact with nursing in 2001 – back then as a student. More than 20 years later, I was able to return to this very place, this time not as a student, but as an inventor. Sharing my experiences in nursing and presenting the new product from my OKE brand at this location was something very special for me.
In class, it quickly becomes clear that many are hearing about pumps for the first time. When I explain how they work and the difficulties associated with them - such as pressure points, visible tubes, or the feeling of being constantly watched - it often causes astonishment. The students' questions are particularly interesting: "How does it feel?" or "Do you always have to carry the pump with you?"
Encounters like these show that caregiving is not just something to think about "later," but something that affects us all. At the same time, young people learn that caregiving is not only associated with stress, but also with
innovation and new ideas.
My conclusion: Talking to students raises awareness - and perhaps even motivates some of them to pursue a career in caregiving themselves or to develop new solutions for those affected.
